Comments:Whenever I go to a new place, I get a hold of the local paper. Even when it's in a language that I don't really understand, it gives me a good idea about what's going on, what the place is like. And the ads are always funny!

Comments:I heard about a guy who travels everywhere, and never reads or carries a travel guide. He just asks the local people about everything as he goes along, so he doesn't end up following the same-old travel routes. Sounds like a good idea, if you have the guts (and the money) to go blind.

Comments:I find that a good way to meet people on the road is to be doing something that is fun: playing music, juggling, drawing, playing a game, drawing, or anything. It breaks the ice, and you you can kinda talk about these things even when you don't really speak the language.

Comments:A wonderful place to get travel guides to amazing, out-of-the-way destinations is Bradt Publications. They have hiking guides to South America and Africa, a field guide to Antarctica, and such like that.

Travel Tip: If you're headed to South American, a fantastic organization to join for information and assistance is the South American Explorers Club. It's group well worth the cost.

Travel Tip: When flying on a plane with small children, always have something for them to eat or drink during landings and take-offs. The swallowing helps them equalize the pressure in their ears. If not, they're really miserable.
